Summer has a long history of being a perfect time for educational and field trip. And for years now, the social department for international students in Tambov Medical Institute has always utilized its summers through outings such as art, natural history and science museums, as well as theaters, zoos and historical sites. And no doubt these trips are very beneficial to international students who begin to understand and appreciate different arts and culture, which is important to their adaption into the new environment.
And not long ago, the social department for international students in Tambov Medical Institute embarked on a culturally enriching trip to the town of Michurinsk. Michurinsk is located 100 kilometers from Tambov and by statistics it is the second most populous town in Tambov region. Kozlov as it was called until 1932, Michurinsk is a horticulture culture, with an institute founded by the Soviet scientist I.V. Michurin who lived there until 1935 and after whom the city is named. And a visit to the museum of the Michurinsk State Agrarian University, helped international students understand the works of Michurin, which included the different types of apples and other plants he well documented in three volumes of books which are translated in English language.
After the museum session, students headed to Michurin’s residence which was somehow located in an isolated piece of land and far from town surrounded by a beautiful gardens. Like any other scientist, Michurin chose to live far from town or people probably to avoid any form of disturbances, hence this says much about the quality of his works. Furthermore, outside Michurin’s house stands a symbolic 100 years tree which students could not resist but stop and take photos around with some admiring the beauty of the gardens before heading to the local stadium for a football match.
Even though the educational trip to Michurinsk was almost hindered by the rains, a quick research among the students suggested that a great deal of factual information was retain. Students were able to recall details about Michurin’s profound works and the town of Muchurinsk as a whole. While some nursed they loss of the football match, it is no doubt the purpose of the educational was fulfilled with the newly acquired knowledge (written by Musanda Sishumba).
